Henry S. Smith

Henry S. Smith was born around 1807 in Putnam County, New York. On 21 December 1831, he married Phoebe (Phebe) Ann Barker. They had one daughter, Elizabeth T. Smith, who was born 28 February 1835 in Erie County, New York, and who married William Henry Hammersley on 6 October 1853.

The 1855 New York State Census has Henry and Phoebe Smith living in Brooklyn, and lists Putnam County as the birthplace for Henry and Greene County for Phoebe. Henry is listed as a “Carman” or “Cartman” for his employment. Also listed are Elizabeth Hammersley (Erie County), her husband William (England), and Henry’s mother-in-law, Phoebe Barker (aged 83 from Greene County).

The 1860 United States Federal Census has Henry Smith, Phebe Ann Smith, Elizabeth Hammersley, Grace C. Hammersley, and Charles Hammersley living in Flint, Michigan.

The 1870 United States Federal Census has Henry and Phebe Smith living in Geneva, Wisconsin.

The 1880 United State Federal Census lists Henry Smith as a widower and retired farmer. He is living with his daughter and son-in-law, William and Elizabeth Hammersley, and two of their children, Charles and Willie. His parents are listed as having been born in New York.

Henry is my 4th great grandfather. I am seeking to find out who were his parents. As you can imagine, with a last name like Smith, the search has been difficult, compounded by the fact that Upstate New York is not the most readily available family history data.
